The Triquetra is most commonly know to represent the threefold nature of the Goddess. Maiden, Mother and Crone, or Wise Woman. It also symbolizes life, death and rebirth, in addition to the three forces of nature: Earth, Air, and Water.
A common representation of the symbol is with a circle that goes through the three interconnected loops of the Triquetra. The circle emphasizes the unity of the whole combination of the three elements.
For Christians, the Triquetra represents the Trinity:
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, three persons as one
God. Its three identical arcs represent equality, its
continuous line expresses eternity, and the
interweaving represents indivisibility and unity.
Triquetra is a word derived from the Latin tri- (“three”) and quetrus (“cornered”).
